CALL FOR PAPERS The use of technology in the practice of medicine has been a standard of care for centuries. As more innovations in medical technology are being made, the standard of healthcare is also raised to match what technology can offer to improve patient's care. The 34th Canadian Medical and Biological Engineering Society Conference, as a part of the Festival of International Conferences on Caregiving, Disability, Aging and Technology, is committed to provide a forum for international researchers to present their latest work and exchange ideas on the advancement of the theory and practice of medical device technology. To celebrate the success of this conference, the Journal of Medical and Biological Engineering is pleased to announce a special issue on the "Innovations in Clinical Devices". Prospective authors are invited to submit their research contributions related to the theme of this special issue. Authors who have presented at the conference will be given priority to publish in this issue and should include a footnote on page one that states an earlier version of this manuscript has been presented at the 34th Canadian Medical and Biological Engineering Society Conference. All manuscripts will be subject to a rigorous peer-reviewed process. An electronic file should be sent to the guest editors or submitted online at the journal website.

CALL FOR PAPERS Recent advancements of materials are significant. All the materials, however, are never perfect but have several merits and demerits. Even though natural products in vivo: i.e. bones, dents, skins, organs etc. in human bodies are fantastic in their properties and performances in regards of their compositions, components and structures. They are the succeeded results of the biological evolution during >500 million years. We can not prepare exactly same materials in vitro, but we can develop artificial materials by or modern sciences and technologies. Those artificial materials may have superior properties and higher performances than natural products. Those artificial materials are never perfect in medical and dental aspects because their compositions, structures, properties and producing conditions are often far from the materials in our human bodies. The most important feature should be Bio-compatibility and Bio-functionality: i.e. the balance of Bio-activity and Bio-inactivity. We must consider: (1) Which materials are needed? (2) How can we make them? (3) Where/How can we use them? and (4) How can we evaluate them? at the same time. In those regards, we are focusing “Functional Coating of Materials for Medical/Dental Application” in this issue. Suggested topics include but are not restricted to: CALL FOR PAPERS The special issue seeks to highlight recent trends and innovative developments in biomaterials and tissue repair. Tissue repair is the use of a combination of cells, engineering and materials methods, and suitable biochemical and physiochemical factors to improve or replace biological functions. We invite investigators to contribute original research articles that will stimulate the continuing efforts to explore aspects of cells and biomaterials for repair of tissues (i.e., bone, cartilage, blood vessels, teeth, skin, etc.). Potential topics include, but are not limited to:
